Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Since 1985

Acupuncture therapy for stroke related conditions such as paralysis, speech or swallowing problems, as well as depression is commonly practiced in Asia. Studies involving thousands of patients published in Asia and Europe, have demonstrated significant benefits to patients who have suffered a stroke. These studies indicate patients get well faster and perform better in self-care, require less nursing and rehabilitation therapy, and result in more economical use of healthcare resources. Unfortunately, since most of studies come from China, they get little credence from the Western medical community, leading to what is known as publication bias. Funding has not been made available in the United States for the proper studies needed to confirm the claims made in Asia of helping stroke patients. Such studies, demand significant resources for proper clinical analyses. Generally, for the acute phases of stroke affecting the meridians or organs, we use herbal decoctions or remedies from our extensive herbal pharmacy for treatment. The use of acupuncture and moxibustion may also be used as additional therapy. During the recovery phase, stroke sequelae symptoms will be principally treated with acupuncture. As an alternative approach there's a lot we can do with Chinese Medicine. Give us a call. All first time patient consultations are free. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT ONE OF OUR OFFICES:

  • GOUT

Symptoms of Gout can be alleviated with acupuncture. However the root cause of gout is an increased serum level of uric acid. This is more often than not caused by an imbalance in blood sugar levels. The best way to treat gout is through metabolic treatment. Our treatment includes herbal medicine with prescriptions from our herbal pharmacy, along with nutrition, diet and lifestyle changes. The Chinese herb Ermiao wan for example, reduces swelling and edema and, is being used in China to treat gout patients and those with hyperuricemia, or elevated uric acid levels. Dandelion has also been used by herbalists for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be made into a tea or poulticed with herbs topically. Dandelion is known to reduce swelling and edema around joints. Another herb, Burdock root decreases tissue swelling and inflammation. The root is made into a tea or it can be poulticed topically. Acupuncture may one day be as common a remedy for headache relief as taking aspirin. The traditional Chinese methods of treatment is gaining much respect in the Western medical community as a viable therapy because of it's lack of side effects. There’s a growing body of clinical research supporting acupuncture's role as a headache therapy. Research is showing that those who add an acupuncture regimen to their medical treatment report less pain and better quality of life compared to those who don’t. Studies show that the acupuncture results could have a major impact on the treatment of chronic headaches, noting that medicine is often not effective for people who suffer with this type of head pain and in some cases, medicine can actually make the headaches worse. Our advantage with our acupuncture treatments and the herbal medicine prescribed from our herbal pharmacy is that they can have very effective results without many of the side effects of Western medicine. Acupuncture is an extremely effective therapy for neck pain. Studies show those treated for neck pain with acupuncture have greater improvement in motion related neck pain compared with those treated with massage. Massage and acupuncture are basically the same type of therapy: a pressure stimulus, but acupuncture is very intense pressure inside the muscles. With massage, you can't get quite the same intensity of pressure, so in the end we strongly believe it's not as effective as acupuncture. Everyone is different and Chinese medicine uses acupuncture as one approach to neck pain. We also practice herbal medicine and make prescriptions from our medical grade herbal pharmacy. The American Pain Society and American College of Physicians advise that doctors should consider acupuncture as an alternative therapy for patients with chronic lower-back pain that's not helped by conventional treatment. We believe Acupuncture and herbal medicine with herbs prescribed from our medical grade herbal pharmacy helps relieve pain and improve health. The effects of acupuncture treatments come from stimulating the central nervous system. This may trigger the release of chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either alter the experience of pain or produce bodily changes that promote a sense of well-being. If other treatments have failed doctors and patients should consider acupuncture as an alternative that may have positive results. Learn more of what we can do for you. Acupuncture may not always work for everyone, but over 50% of patients with moderate Osteo Arthitis experience a benefit. An advantage of acupuncture over nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other medications is its lack of side effects. We also prescribe herbs from our medical grade herbal pharmacy. Some forms of Osteo Arthritis may respond better than others to acupuncture. Patients with Osteo Arthritis of the knee or spine have typically had the best success. It may take more than a few sessions before symptoms begin to improve, but the benefits can last a month or more, before a follow-up treatment is necessary. A clinical study published in 2015 in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine reported patients treated with electro-acupuncture performed on patients with Osteo Arthitis of the knee improved pain, stiffness and physical function, as well as reduced inflammation. Every patient is different. Call us and see what we can do for you with a free first-time patient consultation.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can help with tinnitus, but it's best to treat the root cause of tinnitus first. This could be anything from a vitamin deficiency to nerve damage or a problem with an organ. Chinese Medicine has treated billions of patients for thousands of years. Considering this viable alternative medicine approach, drugs or steroids are not the only options given their inherent side effects. Sinuses are literally air pockets located in the cheekbones, between the eyes and the forehead.  There are small channels connect the sinuses to the nasal passages, allowing mucus to drain into the nose from the sinuses and air to flow into the sinuses from the nose. Typical sinus problems that can be treated with acupuncture include allergies, bacterial infections and the common cold. Acupuncture is an alternative Chinese medicine treatment that dates back thousands of years. Different methods of acupuncture have also been practiced by many other ethnic groups including Arabs, Eskimos and he South African Bantu tribe. In the treatment of sinusitis as in many other Chines medicinal treatments, herbal medicine is also used depending on the specific needs of the patient. Many herbs have the advantage of reducing nasal congestion/mucus or inflammation without the side effects of Western medicine and we have an extensive medical grade herbal pharmacy. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are playing a very important role in the management of hypertension. As herbalists we have a medical grade herbal pharmacy we prescribe herbs from. Studies suggest acupuncture may benefit those with high blood pressure and may lower their risk of stroke and heart disease. Results have shown confirmation that the ancient Chinese medical technique is beneficial for patients with mild to moderate hypertension. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese Medicine, the elevated blood pressure and symptoms are regarded as the superficial aspect of a deeper underlying health condition, so the treatment is not just to eliminate or alleviate the symptoms, but rather treat the underlying cause, and to have a prevention-oriented, holistic approach for hypertension patients. We believe that the partnership between the patient and practitioner is extremely important. Self management should always be emphasized along with the treatment. Every patient is different. Clinical studies show acupuncture and herbal medicine help relieve the symptoms of allergies including seasonal allergies especially for those who are seeking a supplement or alternative to Western medicine or if their current medication leads to side effects. The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, the professional and licensing organization for the practice of acupuncture says acupuncture may be an "excellent complement to routine care, often minimizing the need for medications, releasing the patient from continuous exacerbation-remission cycles."  Springtime allergies as related to the Element of Wind and allergies are looked on as being caused by an imbalance in the flow of qi or a blockage of qi to nasal passages and sinuses. Chinese herbs have been used for centuries for the treatment of allergies. Some herbs we use from our medical grade herbal pharmacy are known to dry phlegm, others relieve coughs and alleviate itchy, red eyes. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can help one to focus, increase one’s memory and to think more clearly. Part of this is our treatment process, which is extremely individualized through the intake of information specific to each patient and understanding their unique imbalances. In addition to herbal treatments from our extensive medical grade herbal pharmacy, there are six acupuncture points connected with specific organs and their meridians, which can affect memory: The Kidney 1, Heart 7, Lung 7, Pericardium 6, Si Shen Cong and Du 20. The Heart 7 for example is a very powerful acupuncture point on the wrist. Different points that affect different organs have different influences on memory.  The spleen for example, affects short term memory, concentration and your ability to think analytically. The kidney helps with short term memory and your ability to retain information. The heart affects your long term memory and how quickly you can access information stored. In Chinese medicine Shen or spirit is what controls your consciousness, your emotions and your cognitive thinking ability. Interruptions in the Shen result in symptoms like insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, lack of focus, scattered thinking, bad memory and constantly forgetting things. Natural hay fever remedies with little or no side effects, based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, may be an effective way to gain control of your health. Hay fever is a common respiratory condition that can be treated effectively with Chinese medicine. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to allergens in our environment, affecting the nose, eyes, lungs and sinus cavities causing very uncomfortable and frustrating symptoms. Usually Hay fever symptoms include: itchy eyes & throat, runny nose, sneezing, sinus congestion, headaches, irritability, depression, insomnia and loss of appetite. Chinese medicine sees hay fever as an inability to produce enough energy from the digestive system for a healthy immune response to wind and allergens. In addition to acupuncture treatments, we have a medical grade herbal pharmacy we make prescriptions from. Each treatment is customized to the needs of our patients. Learn more. Our treatment of bronchitis generally involves arriving at a proper diagnosis or a pattern. A pattern unique to a patient is what our treatment is based on, not the general condition of that patient. In Chinese medicine, respiratory infections such as bronchitis are seen as heat in the lungs due to exterior pathogens. Bronchitis is often remedied first with cupping, or using suction cups on the upper back, and acupuncture to relax the bronchial constriction and relieve the cough. These treatments are followed by herbal therapy with prescriptions made from our medical grade herbal pharmacy to remove the pathogen, clear the lungs and silence the cough. We believe it is also important in the treatment of bronchitis to support the healthy functioning of connected organs, and to provide dietary and lifestyle advice to our patients such as eating more vegetables or to quit smoking. Every patient is different. To learn more of how we can specifically help you, call us or do a free first time patient consultation. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT ONE OF OUR OFFICES:

When it is working properly, your spleen provides moisture to your skin, hair, eyes, blood, etc. When it isn't working properly, the fluid can accumulate and become dampness, foggy thinking, slow energy and aching muscles and joints. With weakness in the spleen, dampness can become phlegm which is what congests your nose and chest. We believe it is critical in understanding whether or not these symptoms are due to illness, allergies or diet to properly diagnose our patients. Phlegm is a Yin substance which means it is slow, mucky and cold. Eating warm sweet foods will support the spleen and will help your body prevent more phlegm from accumulating. This does not include refined sugar, candy or brownies, but it does include foods like sweet potato, ginger, beets, squash, grapes, rice, coconuts, wild salmon and organic chicken. Bitter foods like radish, parsley, alfalfa, celery, green tea and sour foods like lemons and limes, can help drain phlegm. We advise our patients to start with their diet first. If that is not enough, acupuncture and Chinese medicine with herbs prescribed from our medical grade herbal pharmacy can help improve their health by strengthening their spleen and reducing phlegm. Every patient is different and our treatments are very customized. Learn more of how we can help you with a free first time patient consultation. Call us!

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are extremely successful in the treatment of symptoms associated with Ménière's disease. In addition to acupuncture and prescribing herbal treatments from our medical grade herbal pharmacy, we also believe dietary adjustments which involve reducing cholesterol, reducing fluid intake, stopping alcohol, and eliminating added salt from the diet are important to our patients. The reduction in salt intake for example, is most important, as salt increases fluid retention and pressure in the inner ear. Stopping coffee and cigarettes is also important, because they constrict the blood vessels. Studies show the beneficial effects from five types of acupuncture; body, ear or scalp acupuncture, fluid acupuncture point injection, or moxibustion and suggest beneficial effects with acupuncture for both those in an acute phase of Ménière's, as well as those who have had Ménière's for several years. Every one of our patients is different and has individualized needs. Learn more about what can do in you specific situation. Call us!

Certain acupuncture points are thought to regulate blood flow through the abdominal cavity and relax the nervous system, which can help calm muscular contractions. Studies show acupuncture can be just as effective as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines for reducing menstrual pain. In addition to pain relief, don’t be surprised if these changes also lead to better digestion, better sleep, and a steadier mood.  However, if these measures aren’t enough to improve your quality of life, we can offer you further refinement of a natural herbal medicine approach with prescriptions from our medical grade herbal pharmacy. Also, keep in mind that excessively painful menstruation can be a sign of a more serious underlying medical issue, such as endometriosis, a uterine infection, or a problem with the uterine anatomy. Studies on Acupuncture and Menopause since the early seventies have suggested that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are effective treatments for hot flashes, anxiety, insomnia, vaginal dryness and many other symptoms associated with menopause. More recent studies show extremely positive results. We have a medical grade herbal pharmacy we prescribe from for some treatments. Acupuncture points to treat the emotional and physical effects of menopause are located all over the body. For our patients the acupuncture treatment is  involves tiny needles placed in their legs, arms, shoulders and toes. There is little sensitivity to the insertion of acupuncture needles. They are very thin, so that several acupuncture needles can go into the middle of a typical hypodermic needle. Occasionally, there is a brief moment of discomfort as the needle penetrates the skin, but once the needles are in place, most of our patients relax and often even fall asleep for the duration of the treatment. The length, number and frequency of treatments will vary. Typical treatments last from five to 30 minutes, with the patient being treated one or two times a week. Some of our patients symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while more severe or chronic ones often require multiple treatments to see progress.  MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT ONE OF OUR OFFICES:

The patients we treat recover quickly from stress, anxiety and panic attacks. When we treat people with stress and emotional disorders using acupuncture and Chinese herbs, prescribed from our medical grade herbal pharmacy. We tailor an individualized and focused treatment strategy to the specific imbalances of each person. We place very thin and virtually painless acupuncture needles in the body to open up blockages in energy flow, and to support systems that are weak or out of balance with the rest of the body. Our approach allows the body to heal itself naturally, and the tailored treatment provides effective results. Treatment also aims to resolve the problems from the root cause, for lasting relief. Western drugs for anxiety have a slew of side affects, which can make one question the intelligence of taking the drugs or prescribing them in the first place. With a certified acupuncturist/herbalist, the risks are almost nonexistent and are far outweighed by the potential benefits. The majority of patients say they sleep better and have a stronger sense of overall well-being after just a few sessions. If you're already receiving treatment for anxiety, adding acupuncture and Chinese medicine to your current regimen can be very beneficial. If you decide it works for you, you can work with your doctor to wean yourself off anxiety medication.  Learn more about how we can help you with your anxiety with a free first time patient consultation.

Acupuncture is one of the natural as well as safe ways to treat depression. Anxiety and Stress are  common symptoms of depression which is caused mainly due to chemical imbalances in the brain.

A growing number of people are seeking alternatives to Western antidepressant medications, and new research suggests that acupuncture could be a very promising option, considering some of the very serious side effects of Western medicine. Acupuncture helps in a natural way for stimulating the central nervous system and increasing the production of naturally occurring chemicals in the body like endorphins and enkephalins, which are responsible for a person's mood and feeling of well being. The practice of our traditional Chinese medicine therapies and prescription of natural herbs from our medical grade herbal pharmacy can often be as effective as Western antidepressants without the side effects. It has been proven that acupuncture can actually work faster at reducing some symptoms and also that acupuncture may help with the negative sexual side effects of some Western medications. One study showed that three months treatment with acupuncture had helped both men and women with several aspects of sexual functioning while treating depression. Every patient is different. We offer a customized approach to our treatments depending on the specific needs of our patients. Learn how we can help you with your depression. First time patients get a free consultation.

In Chinese medicine, constipation is caused by a deficiency in the spleen and stomach. It is often a result of dryness in the large intestines from foods that do not support the digestive process. Acupuncture can help to restore proper circulation, relieve pain and balance the body. Particular acupuncture points can have an effect on gastrointestinal mobility, serving as an alternative remedy for constipation. Acupuncture treatments can relax the colon, spleen and stomach to stimulate movement. In addition, Chinese herbs can be prescribed especially for constipation, which can relax stuck qi and restore intestinal function. With acupuncture and Chinese herbs from our medical grade herbal pharmacy, we can treat various gastrointestinal disorders. Not only can the treatments help relieve the symptoms, they can  with the right patient circumstances change the underlying constitution of the body to achieve long-term results. Constipation is a very nonstandard condition because bowel movements differ significantly from person to person. Results will often vary. Chinese Medicine offers many natural treatments to help regulate bowel movements and help relieve constipation. Constipation in many cases is not indicative of a medical problem. However, one should seek medical advice if constipation continues for an extended period of time or if it is accompanied by unusual pain or blood in the stool, or does not respond to home remedies. Everyone is different. Learn how we can help you with your constipation. First time patient consultations are free.

There are many causes of diarrhea, including parasites, food intolerances, reaction to medicines, intestinal disease, bacterial or viral infection, and irritable bowel syndrome. Our treatment of diarrhea generally involves finding a proper diagnosis or pattern in our patients. This pattern within the individual is what treatment is based on not the general condition. The following patterns may represent the underlying contributing factors for the development of diarrhea: stomach food stagnation, spleen qi deficiency, kidney yang deficiency, stomach fire, stomach dampness, stomach cold, stomach qi deficiency, and the liver attacking the spleen. Studies show strong scientific support to treating IBS with Chinese herbs and Chinese herbalism is most effective when each patient is treated not only for their condition, but also for their bodily constitution and other presenting symptoms. According to the principles of Chinese medicine, each patient must be treated as an individual, which is what we do when we practice acupuncture or herbal medicine therapies with herbs prescribed from our herbal pharmacy. Lyme disease is known as "Gu syndrome" in Chinese medicine. The Chinese have successfully treated Gu syndrome diseases for thousands of years (syphilis, treponema, leptospirosis, lyme disease) with herbal medicine.  The diagnosis of our patients in Chinese medicine is categorized as a type of internal wind hiding beneath a mountain which makes it very resistant to Western medical treatment. The bacteria encapsulate themselves in a type of glue called biofilm which make it resistant to antibiotics. It is also very important in treating Gu syndrome to treat both the pathogen while also supporting the bodies immune system . Our treatment involves keeping the pathogen guessing by modifying the herbal formula with prescriptions from our medical grade herbal pharmacy every 6 weeks to 6 months in order to prevent bacterial resistance and autoimmune reactions in our patients. Every patient is different and treated based on their unique symptom picture and constitution which changes as time progresses. Acupuncture helps to boost their immune system, it relieves pain in their joints and muscles and can help with their chronic fatigue and emotions as depression can often be a challenge with lyme disease patients. Diabetes is a disease that is becoming increasingly common and progressively complicated. There were approximately 175 million people afflicted with diabetes worldwide, according to a report released during the 15th International Diabetes Federation Congress. Clinicians used to treat it as a disease of high blood glucose; however, we now view it as a disease of many factors, involving abnormal breakdown of fat, protein and glucose. Glucose is the sugar our body uses as energy for our cells. Current management involves controlling glucose levels to minimize complications in the finer blood vessels (microvasculature) as well as controlling other metabolic abnormalities such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol / triglycerides, or obesity to prevent complications in the bigger blood vessels (macrovasculature). Here in the U.S., it is uncommon for patients to receive acupuncture therapy every day, as is the method used in the clinical studies reported in Chinese medical journals. Instead, we often undertake a course of therapy with acupuncture once or twice per week with our patients. The impact of the less frequent treatment is not as great as with a daily acupuncture regimen. But, through the combination of the less regular acupuncture and the daily ingestion of herbs prescribed from our herbal pharmacy, our patients can reasonably expect to accomplish results comparable to those reported in China where the majority of patients get to more normal blood sugar levels and have some relief of symptoms. Our younger patients and patients who have had diabetes for only a few years usually have the best results. We are in a position to provide our patients expert treatment for diabetes, because the points to be used are also used for treating other disorders. For example, the acupuncture point zusanli, which is called Stomach-36; located on the lower leg is one of the most commonly used points for chronic diseases and is used especially when the disease is clearly affected by our patients' diets. Every patient is different whether they are Type 1, Type 2 or have another variation of diabetes like Gestationa or IGT. Let's talk about your situation with a free first time patient consultation.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are extremely successful in the treatment of sweating. In fact, how a patient sweats is a key factor in how we identify disharmony within their body. Sweat is considered a fundamental substance in Chinese medical text and is studied in-depth. While sweating disorders can be treated with surgery and drugs, it is worthwhile to know that there is an alternative to invasive and often risky procedures and medications. Excessive sweating of the head and face, often associated with a damp head and excessive yang in the kidneys, are frequently treated with yinchenhao or poria. People who sweat excessive in the chest area may have a heart and spleen chi deficiency and a yin deficiency in the heart and kidneys. Treatments for these conditions often include guipitang and tianwangbuzin prescriptions fom our medical grade herbal pharmacy. Before acupuncture and herbal treatment can begin, it is necessary to correctly diagnose the disease in our patients:  Sweating is a symptom for many different patterns of disharmony within the body. Chinese medicine aims to treat each individual uniquely depending on their pattern and symptoms. We do an interview and ask questions about how, what, where and when our patients perspire, sleep, eat, drink and exercise, etc. We also take a pulse and observe the tongue. This interview and physical examination will help create a clear picture on which we can create a treatment plan specifically for our patients' needs. Call for a free first time patient consultation. When treating our patients who suffer from impotence with acupuncture and specifically erectile dysfunction, acupuncture can be performed at Bladder 23, Du 4, and Ren 4. In cases of Kidney deficiency that require warming, moxibustion can also be performed at these acupuncture points. The moxibustion treatment involves the burning of an herb, Ai Ye, to warm and circulate the energy in the local area, strengthening the Life Gate fire. For Blood Stasis conditions, acupuncture alone can be sufficient to break the stagnation of Blood. Additional acupuncture points, such as Liver 3 and Large Intestine 4, can be used to strongly circulate energy in the body. Chinese Herbal Medicine with prescriptions from our medical grade herbal pharmacy, can also used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). In cases of Deficient Mingmen Fire, an herbal formula such as Zuo Gui Wan (Return Left Pill) can be used. This classical herbal treatment warms the Kidney energy and tonfies the Yang. Herbal formulas are often modified to treat specific symptoms or balance a patient's constitution. In cases of erectile dysfunction, animal products are often used for their increased effectiveness. Ge Jia (Gecko), Lu Rong (Deer Antler), and Hai Ma (Sea Horse) can be added to increase the potency of the treatment. Plant-based herbs are also helpful, such as Rou Gui (cinnamon), Yin Yang Huo (Horny Goatweed), and Fu Zi (aconite), and are less expensive than animal products. See how we can help you. Traditional Chinese medicine has been treating urinary symptoms such as overactive bladder for more than 2,000 years. Acupuncture and Chinese medicinal herbs prescribed from our herbal pharmacy  potentially offer our patients an alternative to the treatment of not only the symptoms of overactive bladder, but possibly the root cause as well.  Rather than looking at the body to find the particular tissue, muscle, or organ that is unhealthy or diseased, we look at our patient's body as a whole and see a symptom can come from an imbalance in the interaction between the tissue, muscle, and organ systems.  Once our patient's  imbalance is corrected, the root of the problem is improved, and their body can work to heal itself. Acupuncture face-lifts once popular among wealthy Chinese before communism, are gaining popularity for our patients seeking an alternative to surgery and who are willing to experience the power of ch'i in the name of beauty. The needles are generally painless, but they give some of our patients a slight stinging sensation in sensitive areas. First an assessment is given to check the patient's constitution and to see which energy channels are blocked. Specific areas of the face are linked to internal organs. Sagging skin can be caused by weakness in the spleen and circles under the eye is often linked to liver or stomach weakness. So by putting needles in the pressure points relating to these organs, the underlying cause can be treated without surgery or side effects. See what we can do for you.
